SIRPA JOKINEN Air Sound Installation and Other Works 18.11 - 5.12.2009
Two installations Flight no:3 and Departure deal with the state- of- minds and the physical structures connected to flying. Flying in an airplane can be experienced as a claustrophobic situation where one has to listen to the safety instructions that refer to a catastrophe when tied to one's seat without barely being able to move. Flight no:3 consists of recordings made during flight with a self made piazo contact microphone from the wall surface of the airplane. They are played through construction of ventilation tubes in the gallery space. This soundtrack is recorded sounds of motor and safety instructions of different languages from airplanes of various sizes and nationalities. Its duration is about 10 minutes. The ventilation tube construction modifies the resonance of the sounds and makes them spacial; they appear to be heard from different points in the surrounding space. The installation is built of ventilation tubes of various sizes that now operate as speakers. They form two stereo pairs. The work aims to find alternative ways to play sounds. Piazo elements amplified by audio transformers are installed inside the tubes. Piazo element is an electronic component that is used for example in doorbells or toys. Departure is an installation of chalk surfaced birdcages. The open doors of the birdcages refer to euphoric aspect of flying, leaving one's past behind and going for a flight gliding above the clouds. The chalk surface makes the cages look like stalactite caves, that take a long time to form. Flight no:3 operates in present time, the sound-loop of the installation repeats itself continuously. The sound is imprisoned in the Flight no:3 when in the Departure it (the bird) is liberated. The great amount of background noise in an urban environment has also been a motive for building this exhibition. The city is full of appliances that create noise. The airplane pollutes also this way. It feels relieving to deal with this noise to create a structure around it.
