TIINA NEVANPERÄ
The Sense of Painting
Paintings
Gallery Jangva
11.8 - 28.8.2011

The first idea is naturally the notion of myself as an absolutely free being.
(Earliest Program for a System of German Idealism, 1796)

The world of the fairytale is the complete opposite of the world of truth – and precisely for that reason so completely similar to it – just as chaos is similar to the completed creation. (Novalis: The Universal Brouillon, 1798 - 1799)

Painting is still in a process of becoming, as an art form it is never completed. Its essence is openness. It presents a new image of thought and gives an opportunity for new experiences, which have not yet been encountered or played out by the viewer. Painting is comprised of two inseparable parts: the actual and virtual. These two halves never resemble one another, and the appearing of the painting always takes place within a difference that these two halves create. Painting directs beyond itself to something that can be shown as a semblance or an illumination, which is true, but of which we can only speak indirectly. This is why painting as an event can only be experienced as such. Ready-made concepts, which refer to objects that already exist, thus often feel as if they have been superimposed.

Therefore what is at stake in painting? Something that we share, but which separates us, this is the essence of painting. Concepts, painting’s own concepts, which are created through the process of experiencing painting, are characterised as generative rather than regulative. It all begins with sensibility. (For definitions of the actual and virtual see Gilles Deleuze Difference and Repetition, Continuum 2004).
