KETTU 2000
PINJA SORMUNEN, EMMA SUOMINEN, VANESSA VIRMAJOKI
Other Shoes
Photgraph /video installation
28.1 - 14.2.2010

In the project Other Shoes the members of Kettu 2000 collective, three young women, exchanged their lives with each other for one week’s time.

For a week the women gave away their lives completely, and got a new life in exchange. They exchanged everything, from clothes to jobs, apartments to beloved ones. They wrote down schecules, means and basic instructions on how to lead their life as authentically as possible.

Pinja Sormunen lives in Eira with her boyfriend and is studying photography at the University of Art and Design Helsinki. Pinja’s hobbies also include studying Japanese and meditating. Emma Suominen took charge of Pinja’s life for the week.

Emma is a freelance photographer from Punavuori, Helsinki. Her everyday life consists of spending time working, with family, friends and in cultural avocations, doing sports and having parties. Vanessa Virmajoki stepped into Emma’s shoes.

Vanessa lives in East London with her brother and two other flatmates. She graduated as a photographer on summer 2009. Vanessa’s life contains miscellaneous shoots, and an extensive and colourful circle of friends. Vanessa’s role was taken on for a week by Pinja Sormunen.

The starting point of the project was to explore if it was possible to adopt the other’s identity, if everything that is external will be exchanged.

The project was an experiment, a test. There was no right or wrong, there only was a project: Am I able to let go of myself and live in the moment, to be someone else? The other’s place can perhaps physically be taken over, but can a person learn to think and decide as someone else?

Other Shoes is a visual study of untrue real life, and when living it, the women were forced to think of their relations to themselves as well as with each other.

In addition to the video installation on display, there’s also other photography-based works, which arose from the life-changing experience.
